Beginners and experienced players welcome.

One of the oldest games known to the Chinese culture and mankind, Mahjong has evolved today to suit the tastes of the modern Chinese while keeping its roots intact. A witness to all major happenings of the Chinese from the birth of a baby to weddings to Chinese New Year - the Chinese are passionate about their game. Call it Mahjong, Ma Jong, Mah Jong, MahJongg, Ma Diao, Ma Cheuk, MahCheuck, Baak Ling, or Pung Chow – for the true Chinese, the brain game is as vital as the beating heart!

Usually played with 144 tiles bearing Chinese characters and symbols, there are a lot of regional variations to the rules and structure of the game. Most variations however commonly have 4 players bearing 13 tiles each, whereby players draw and discard tiles until they achieve a legal hand using the fourteenth drawn tile to form four melds and a head. Use of simples and honors, the scoring system, order of dealing and play vary slightly according to the form of game.

Class Schedules

Printable/Downloadable Schedule

Register online using the form at the bottom of this page.

There are a number of reasons we ask for pre-registration, especially for new classes.  Your instructor will need to know how many participants to prepare for, it allows for a much faster check-in experience and doesn't cause overcrowding in the office when participants happen to arrive at the same time.  Your instructor is also responsible for setting up the classroom with tables and chairs and needs to have an idea of the attendance.  Some instructors require a minimum or a maximum number of people to present a class and if those numbers are not met, they may have to cancel a class or move a class to a larger room.

Please call our office at 706-742-0823 Monday through Thursday to register.  We will ask you several questions and can take a credit card payment when you call.  If you prefer to pay with cash or by check please bring it with you on your first night of class.  Should your class be ongoing, it is most helpful if you can purchase a punch card (prices vary according to the cost of your class).  Each time you come to class your instructor will "punch" your card as they take the attendance.  If you miss a class the card may be used at another time for a class of the same price range.

Class Changes

Please note the class schedules are subject to change at any time depending on minimum participant requirement, illness, holidays, inclement weather, or other unforeseen reasons.  If you have prepaid for a canceled class, you will be offered credit, cash (if paid in cash), or check (if paid by check or credit card you will receive a refund check from the City of Winterville).
