New Kids Classes Coming in September

Kids Classes at the Winterville Center

Coming in September, we have new classes designed just for kids and teens! These classes include art, cartooning, martial arts, and sewing.

Aikido 14 and Up

Learn the Self-defense Secrets of the Japanese Aikido Masters! Aikido is the "alternative" martial art for it deals with violence and aggression in a nonviolent way that uses knowledge of body mechanics and mental focus. Expect to gain balance, stamina and a renewed sense of enthusiasm for life.

Aikido 14 and Up meets Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m with instructor John Smartt. This class is $7.50 per class and is for ages 14 and over. It would be a great class for parents to take with their teens.

Art for Kids

Retired art teacher, Mary Ann Cox will lead students through an exploration of many kinds of art-making including drawing and painting.  They will also learn about important artists through history and their contributions to the world.

Art for Kids meets on Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for ages 9 to 12. The class is $5 per student per class.

Art Across America

Mixed media class that celebrates our American landscape as well as American artists.  From seascapes to sand art, mountain scenes to self-portraits, using a variety of materials both 2D and 3D.  We explore our diverse culture through creativity found in our country.

Art Across America is Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for ages 9 to 12. The instructor is Maria Mueller. It costs $5 per student per class, in addition to a one-time $10 registration fee.

Basic Cartooning

Basic Cartooning will explore the fun, impact, and longevity of an art form that speaks to young and old alike, from engaging humor and adventurous stories to the most scathing social satire. Whether the student plans to continue their training to become a professional artist, or wishes to make the most of doodling and sketching as an enjoyable pastime, we invite you to join us.

Basic Cartooning meets Thursday nights from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with Charles Treadwell for ages 10 to adults. The cost is $10 per class per student.

Kids Can Sew

Does your child enjoy making their own accessories or creating fashion looks? Consider a sewing class, where students can learn the basic skills of sewing and making their own items. Each student will complete a custom project they can take home when finished.

Kids Can Sew will meet on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for ages 12 to 17 with instructor Mary Ann Scanlon. The cost is $5 per student per class, in addition to a one-time $10 registration fee. Sewing machines are provided. Registration is limited to 5 students.
