Winterville Community Center

Community and Culture in Winterville, Georgia

History

The Winterville Center for Community and Culture is located in charming Winterville, Georgia at 371 N. Church St. It is inside the renovated building of the former Winterville High School.

The old Winterville High School sat vacant for sixty years. The last graduating class walked through its doors in 1956. As the ravages of time took a toll on the once-proud building, the roof began to leak, windows were broken. And the bathroom walls had caved in.  Mold and mildew covered the walls, and no one seemed to care.

In 2009, after 12 years of negotiations between the City of Winterville and the Athens-Clarke County Board of Education, the City acquired the deeds to the former Winterville High School and the auditorium next door for $1 each.  These buildings were the last remaining structures of several schools on that site since 1880.

What a difference in 2016. Through the combined efforts of Winterville citizens and city leaders, a rebirth has taken place. The building is proud once again. Come visit us and see the modern kitchen with a gas range and convection oven, two dishwashers, a commercial ice maker, a refrigerator, a freezer, and counter space everywhere. Sit with sixty of your friends at round tables in the dining and activity room. Watch a movie or a PowerPoint presentation using our AV equipment. Take an art or a chess class in one of the brightly colored classrooms. Walk the hallway art exhibit.  Enjoy our new facility; share in Winterville’s pride.
